Photo Contest - October 2016 - Updated

The club organizes in collaboration with Canon Switzerland a photo contest open to all members of the CERN (Persons with a CERN access card).
The only restriction is that the photos must have been taken with a CANON camera (DSLR, bridge or compact).

Terms and Conditions


  1. The European Organization for Nuclear Research (“CERN”) is organizer of the CERN Photography Competition 2016 (“the competition”). Canon will provide 3 cameras for this competition.
  2. The Competition shall take place between 1 October 2016 and 31 October 2016 and shall be administered at CERN by the CERN Photo Club (contact: Didier Steyaert).
  3. Participation in the Competition shall be exclusively for Members of the Personnel at CERN, excluding any who have had a role in setting up the Competition. Employees of CANON and their families are also excluded from participating.
  4. The Competition shall be free to enter.
  5. To enter the Competition, participants are required to upload one or more images (up to a maximum of three images per entry) to
  6.  which meet the following criteria:
  1. Fit with the theme: My view of CERN/Mon regard sur le CERN;
  2. Are original works;
  3. Are taken between1 October 2016 and 31 October 2016
  4. Are in the JPEG digital format and at a resolution suitable for printing each image clearly at A4 size;
  5. Are not indecent or otherwise likely to breach public morality;
  6. Are taken with a Canon camera.

Each submitted image should also include the image Exif data, a title and a short description explaining the image.

  1. Participants can only enter the Competition once. Participants submitting multiple entries will be disqualified.
  2. By uploading their image(s), participants will be deemed to have accepted these terms and conditions in full and without derogation and, in particular, to be asserting that the images that they have submitted are their own original works in which (i) no third party rights are being infringed, and (ii) all necessary consents and approvals have been expressly given to allow the publication and use of the images in accordance with these terms and conditions.
  3. Participants grant CERN copyright in their submitted entries to enable CERN unrestricted use of the images in all formats and media (including in print and in online social networks) and for inclusion and making available in the publicly accessible CERN Document Server (CDS).

In return, CERN grants the participants a non-exclusive, non-commercial, perpetual, worldwide licence in their submitted images to exploit such images; such licence being conditional on such exploitation not being defamatory or derogatory towards CERN.

In addition to the above, CERN will use its reasonable best efforts to credit the photographer responsible for an image each time it uses it.

  1. For the purpose of selecting the winning images, CERN shall compose a jury comprised of two members from CERN and two from CANON. In addition, CERN, in consultation with Canon, shall invite and independent professional photographer to join the jury so that the final composition will be five persons who will choose the winners from among the images submitted in the Competition.
  2. The jury’s decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  3. The Competition will offer three prizes, provided by CANON, one each for the first, second and third placed participants:

            First prize:     Canon EOS 80D EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM
            Second prize: Canon EOS M3 EF-M 18-55mm IS STM
            Third prize:    Canon Powershot SX720

  1. The winning participants will be contacted by email using the details they provide at the time they register for the competition. CANON will use its best efforts to ensure the winning participants will receive their prizes by 15 December 2016 at the latest. CERN is not responsible for ensuring the delivery of the prizes. Any correspondence on this issue shall be directed to CANON.
  1. Participants recognise that for the purposes of running this competition CANON has a need to collect personal information regarding participants and that, to this end such personal information will used by Canon Switzerland S.A. in accordance with its data protection policy. CERN is not responsible for the handling of personal data by CANON. All questions pertaining to such policy are to be directed to CANON.
  2. CANON and CERN reserve the right to refuse entry to or disqualify a participant from the Competition by anyone who is found not to be in compliance with these terms and conditions.
